Disney’s much-loved franchise, The Princess Diaries, is officially returning for its third installment, with Adele Lim set to direct. Known for her work on Joy Ride, Crazy Rich Asians, and Raya and the Last Dragon, Lim expressed her excitement, telling Variety, “As a lifelong fan of The Princess Diaries, I’m thrilled to help bring the third chapter of this iconic story to life. We can’t wait to highlight the themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship that are central to the series and share it with audiences worldwide.”

The new film will see Debra Martin Chase return as producer, having originated the franchise that starred Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, a regular teen who unexpectedly becomes the queen of the fictional kingdom of Genovia. Hathaway will also join the production team through her banner, Somewhere Pictures, and will work alongside executive producers Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack.

In celebration of the announcement, Hathaway took to Instagram, sharing Variety’s post along with a nod to her character’s famous quote from the first movie: “Shut up!”

Fans have eagerly awaited the third film since it entered development in 2022. Last year, Hathaway gave a hopeful update, stating in an interview with V Magazine, “We’re in a good place. There’s nothing official yet, but things are looking positive.”

While plot details remain under wraps, the script is being penned by Flora Greeson, with Debra Martin Chase once again leading production efforts. For now, fans can anticipate the return of this beloved franchise, celebrating girl power and the magic of Genovia.
